Democratic Republic of Congo
Fighting resumes in the eastern DRC

France is deeply concerned by the fighting that has resumed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo between the territories of Rutshuru and Walikale, in particular in Kalembe.

France condemns the ongoing M23 offensive. The current ceasefire, which was negotiated within the framework of the Luanda Process, must be strictly abided by. France reiterates its full support for the Luanda Process in order to find a lasting solution to the crisis. France calls on the parties to immediately implement the commitments made within this framework.

France reaffirms its commitment to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC. At a time when the current crisis is producing serious humanitarian consequences, France calls on all the armed groups to end the violence in order to allow the UN and humanitarian organizations to successfully carry out their activities. The ability to protect civilians and respond to their enormous needs depends on it.


Venezuela
Awarding of the Sakharov Prize (October 24, 2024)

France commends the European Parliament on its decision to award the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia.

This distinction is bestowed in recognition of the Venezuelan opposition’s commitment and courageous voice. In addition, the prize is consistent with France’s expressed support of the Venezuelan people’s call for democracy and peace.
